What is a SWOT analysis?

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. The first two are about the team or business itself, the last two about the world around it. Laid out together they make a plan easier to argue about, because every claim is on a note in front of everyone.

What is on the board

4 frames — Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats — each headed in large type so it reads with the whole board on screen, and a legend with a kind of note for each thing people will write. Drag a note off the legend, or double-click the board.

Strength
Something we do well, or have, that others do not.
Weakness
Something we do badly, or lack.
Opportunity
Something outside us we could use.
Threat
Something outside us that could hurt.

How to run it

  1. Fill each quadrantGive everyone a few minutes per quadrant, in its own colour.
  2. Cut it downMerge duplicates and drop the vague ones. A short honest list beats a long one.
  3. Connect themLook for strengths that meet an opportunity, and weaknesses that meet a threat.
  4. DecideVote on what matters most, and write what you will do about it.
