What is the Lean Canvas?

The Lean Canvas adapts the Business Model Canvas for something new and uncertain. It swaps partners, activities and resources for the problem, the solution, key metrics and an unfair advantage, because for a new product those are the things most likely to be wrong. The aim is not a finished plan but a list of what to test first.

What is on the board

9 frames — Problem, Solution, Key Metrics, Unique Value Proposition, Unfair Advantage, Channels, Customer Segments, Cost Structure, Revenue Streams — each headed in large type so it reads with the whole board on screen, and a legend with a kind of note for each thing people will write. Drag a note off the legend, or double-click the board.

Fact
Something we know to be true today.
Assumption
Something we believe and have not tested.
Risk
The riskiest part: test this first.
Experiment
How we would find out.

How to run it

  1. Problem and customersStart with the top problems and the customers who have them.
  2. Value and solutionWrite the one-line value proposition, then the simplest solution.
  3. NumbersAdd channels, revenue, costs and the few metrics that show it working.
  4. Pick the riskiestMark the riskiest assumption in pink and plan an experiment for it.
