What is the Business Model Canvas?

The Business Model Canvas describes how a business creates, delivers and captures value, in nine blocks on one page. The right side is about customers and value, the left about how it is delivered, and the bottom about the money. Because it fits on one board, a team can see the whole model and argue about one part without losing the rest.

What is on the board

9 frames — Key Partners, Key Activities, Key Resources, Value Propositions, Customer Relationships, Channels, Customer Segments, Cost Structure, Revenue Streams — each headed in large type so it reads with the whole board on screen, and a legend with a kind of note for each thing people will write. Drag a note off the legend, or double-click the board.

How to run it

  1. Start with customersFill Customer Segments and Value Propositions first.
  2. Work outwardsThen channels and relationships, then the activities, resources and partners behind them.
  3. Follow the moneyAdd costs and revenue last, and check they add up.
  4. Mark the guessesUse blue for assumptions and pink for risks, and decide which to test first.
