Move your whiteboards to an open format

Your workshop boards are years of work. Moving them should not mean rebuilding them by hand, or trusting anyone with your password on the way.

Where things stand

Blending Links reads and writes boards as OCIF, an open file format. Today you can bring a board in with Import, one file at a time, from OCIF, Excalidraw, JSON Canvas, Markdown or CSV, and take every board out again in any of those, or as SVG, PNG or PDF. The file converter does the same for a single file.

For boards in Miro, we are building a small desktop app that exports them for you. It is not available yet; this page says how it will work, so you can decide whether it suits you.

How the export app will work

  • It runs on your machine. You sign in to Miro in the app's own window. Your password and tokens stay on your computer and never reach our servers.
  • It uses documented interfaces only. The app reads your boards through Miro's published API, at the pace the API allows, and nothing else.
  • You confirm the content is yours to move before anything is exported.
  • It writes plain files. Each workspace becomes a folder and each board an OCIF file, on your disk. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to import it.

What comes across

The app is designed to map sticky notes, shapes, text, frames, groups, connectors, images, uploaded documents, link previews, cards, tags, mind-map nodes and in-board documents. Anything it cannot map becomes a placeholder that keeps its place and size on the board, with the original data kept in the file so it can be recovered later.

Known losses

Some things are not available through Miro's public API, or have no equivalent here yet:

  • comments
  • freehand drawings
  • kanban and table cells
  • stickers and reactions
  • votes
  • version history
  • board permissions
  • how mind maps lay themselves out (the nodes and their links do come across)

The app will list what it could not bring over for each board, so nothing goes missing silently.

Why an open format

Moving once is the hard part. Once your boards are OCIF files on your own disk you are not locked in again — not to us, not to anyone. Read more about the format.
